New Year, New You: Is It Even Worth Setting a New Year's Goal?

It's that time of year again. Gyms are starting to promote their "New Year, New You" sales, and people on social media are talking about 2025 Resolutions & Goals. Meanwhile, you can hardly remember what your 2024 goal was. And if that's the case, you can probably assume you didn't hit it. You know it was probably related to eating better in-some-fashion and more exercise, but isn't that everyone?

Shouldn't I Just Learn to Be Happy With Who I Am?

You absolutely should! Setting a goal to be healthier shouldn't be about shame & guilt but more about setting out to be an improved version of yourself. Goal setting isn't about beating yourself up for not following through. It's about personal growth, value and a development of self-esteem. Humans are happiest when they are working towards something. Whether it's planning to clean up the garden or planning our next big vacation. When we feel stagnant, we feel stuck. And if you've convinced yourself that setting health goals really isn't for you, it's probably because you are indifferent. We get like that, when we don't believe ourselves anymore from past failures.

Why Set a Goal If I've failed In the Past

You aren't incapable of achieving your goal. Chances are you just haven't been setting them and following through properly. You were either making the goal to big & restrictive like "I'm not eating processed food anymore" or the goal you set for yourself had no true plan. Your relationship with motivation is probably shallow and when that dies, so does the follow through. Goals are great, but without a clear destination and a roadmap, you just keep driving around in circles, driving yourself nuts.

How Do I Set Better Goals?

  • Reflect on what you truly want & why you want it. What would life look like if you reached this goal? What will life look like reaching for this goal?

  • Be specific. Instead of "I want to feel better" say " I want to fit in my old jeans by fall"

  • Break it down into smaller goals so that you can check your success along the way and learn to feel good about small wins.

  • Predict the problems. Goals are fun to create, but assuming everything is going to be easy is setting yourself up for failure. What challenges do you predict you'll face? What is your strategy?

  • Review your goal daily/weekly/monthly. Life gets busy and if you don't actively reflect on your goal often, it will get forgotten.

As You Set Your Goals for This Year...

Remember, yes it's about improving, but it's not about shaming yourself. Setting goals can be fun IF you find small wins along the way and continuosly reflect, check in , and keep moving forward. I hate to sound cliche, but, enjoy the journey. Because if you can't find the joy in the little habits that get you there, you won't be happy when you do get there...IF you ever get there.
